Top 6 Benefits of Having Great Posture

Posture is something that takes a bit of a backseat when it comes to health and fitness. Unfortunately, much of the time, athletes and even those who are not active are not aware of how important proper posture is. If you are one of these people, I am here to convince you of how being more conscious about your posture can improve your health and your life in general.

1. IT BECOMES EASY TO STAY FOCUSED

Our bodies need oxygen to function. The brain has billions of neurons and trillions of synaptic connections which depend on oxygen. These neurons and synaptic connections are in control of your brain’s ability to focus and concentrate. If you have good posture, your blood circulation and oxygen intake improve, ultimately improving your focus and concentration.

2. YOU WON’T FEEL TIRED, DRAINED, OR DEPRESSED

Have you ever noticed how your shoulders slump when you are feeling a bit down? Or how you want to crawl into a little ball on your bed when you are depressed? This is your body’s automatic response to your emotional levels. When you have good posture, you can trick your mind into thinking that you are relaxed and happy.

3. IT PROMOTES BETTER BREATHING

Here’s a fun fact for those of you who slouch: improving your posture can increase your breathing ability by up to 30%. This is due to the frontal muscles and tendons. These tendons and muscles need to be upright or stretched for optimal oxygen intake. Slouching causes these muscles to shorten and inevitably decreases oxygen intake.

4. YOUR MUSCLES WILL THANK YOU FOR IT

Did you know that proper posture can strengthen your muscles? That’s right. By sitting or standing upright you’ll strengthen all the important muscles responsible for carrying your weight. By being aware of your posture, you can ensure that the force of gravity is distributed evenly and that there is no strain on a particular muscle.

5. DIGESTION AND BLOOD CIRCULATION FUNCTION OPTIMALLY

Proper posture ensures that all your body’s organs and muscles are in place and not strained. In other words, they can function the way they are supposed to. Bad posture will compress your organs, hindering their function. Proper posture will ensure that you don’t suffer from ailments such as hernias, acid reflux, or constipation.

6. SAY GOODBYE TO BODY ACHES AND PAINS

There are loads of benefits to having good posture, but the most important benefit is that it will allow your body to function optimally. When you sit and stand with good posture, your organs, bones, joints, and ligaments are properly aligned, allowing them to carry your weight and function properly. In the long run, you can expect less back and neck pain, less tension, and a stronger body.

But how do you prevent yourself from slouching? And how do you stay aware of your posture even during stressful times? It can be difficult to be mindful of your posture 24/7, but if you work at it, you will reap the rewards. There are plenty of exercises and stretches you can do to support your efforts in improving your posture. Remember that in the long run, your body will thank you for it.

Whether you enjoy yoga, CrossFit, or aerobics, regular exercise is important. Combine this with a healthy diet and posture conscious stretches and exercises and you’ll be well on your way to improving your physical and mental health.
Never underestimate the importance of proper posture—take care of your body, and it will take care of you!
